SDG 10- Wheelshare – Making the Future Accessible
Imagine a world that is fully accessible for people with mobility challenges. Imagine a world designed without physical barriers so every human can move through public spaces with simplicity and dignity. Although we are not in this world yet, Wheelshare is making this dream edge closer to reality.
Wheelshare is a tech company dedicated to providing mobility and independence to people with movement issues. The company’s vision and innovation are hinged on providing simple, accessible and efficient personal transportation services in public venues in Israel and around the world.
Wheelshare was founded in 2017 when its team noticed the lack of available wheelchairs in hospitals. The wheelchairs were either locked or left in random places around the building once they were no longer needed. The challenge was to locate a wheelchair quickly when a patient or visitor needed assistance.
The solution Wheelshare created was a custom designed wheelchair lending and docking station, accessible through a multilingual digital app. Now patients or visitors to a hospital, airport, or shopping centre will have access to a wheelchair for the duration of their stay. In a similar way to hiring a bicycle or a car, this clever solution gives everyone freedom of movement.
Wheelshare, and their rentable wheelchairs, delivers the heart and soul of SDG Goal 10.2 by empowering and promoting the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status.
